The Benefits of Group Therapy

Benefits of GT include:

  • Acceptance: Being in a group can help you recognize that you are not alone in your suffering. Understanding that you are not the only one who struggles can help you feel accepted and more comfortable with sharing your story.
  • ‍Voice: Groups provide a sounding board. Groups can offer a different perspective to receive support and share your journey and wisdom which leads to better communication skills.
  • ‍Inclusion: GT help reduce feelings of isolation, for example, for those who suffer from Major Depression, Anxiety, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Substance Abuse Disorders and Chronic Pain conditions where mental health conditions are also present. By nature, many of the above conditions can be extremely isolating for people.
  • ‍Support: Healthy groups encourage appropriate support and acceptance of the members various superficial and fundamental differences. Groups offer support and acceptance which often may not present for the client outside the group context.
  • ‍Encouragement: Groups can spur you on to move forward. Hearing from others about how they’ve overcome their challenges can be encouraging.
  • ‍Growth: The group dynamic has the potential for group members to learn from one another’s experiences. Hearing the struggles and the way in which others create change can allow for personal growth. In addition, seeing group members at various stages can offer hope for newer members as well as a reminder to senior members as to how far they have come.
